In this lesson we will learn the articles in Spanish.

Articles always precede names and agree in gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural).

Definite articles (artículos determinados or definidos) precede nouns referring to previously known beings.

Indefinite articles (artículos indeterminados or indefinidos) modifies names that are not previously known, so they cannot be identified.

In summary

When we say a thing for the first time we use indefinite articles. When we already know that thing, it is before in the conversation or in the statement, we use definite articles. Let's look at the following example:

- Hay un ejercicio que no entiendo. - There is an exercise that I do not understand.

- ¿Cuál? - Which one?

- El ejercicio seis. - Exercise six
