Let's learn some vocabulary about family. Look at the following pictures.

Gender and number
The nouns that name the members of a family vary in gender:
- hijo – hija (son - daughter)
- hermano – hermana (brother - sister)
They also vary in number:
- hijo – hijos (son - sons)
- hermana – hermanas (sister - sisters)
If the plural includes masculine and feminine nouns, we will use the masculine expression:
- Juan y Pedro son dos niños. Son hermanos. (Juan and Pedro are two boys. They are brothers.)
- María y Julia son dos niñas. Son hermanas. (María and Julia are two girls. They are sisters.)
- Jorge es un niño y Lucía es una niña. Son hermanos. (Jorge is a boy and Lucia is a girl. They are brothers.)

Yo soy Mateo. Mi esposa se llama Carmen. Tenemos dos hijos, Pablo y María. También tenemos tres nietos, Nicolás, Manuel, Pedro y una nieta, Julia.
La familia de María
Yo soy María. Mi padre es Mateo y mi madre se llama Carmen. Tengo un hermano que se llama Pablo. Juan es mi esposo. Tenemos un hijo, Pedro y una hija, Julia. Nicolás y Manuel son mis sobrinos. Son los hijos de Pablo.
La familia de Manuel.
Hola, soy Manuel. Tengo un hermano que se llama Nicolás. Mi papá es Pablo y mi mamá, Inés. Mis abuelos son Carmen y Mateo. Tengo dos tíos, María y Juan. También tengo un primo, Pedro y una prima, Julia.
